What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage or as it's known in India "champissage", dates back nearly 4000 years. It was originally used by Indian women who used different oils to keep their hair strong and in beautiful condition. It has also been performed by Indian barbers and masseurs as an integral part of their treatment. It became a normal custom to that people from the king down would have someone tend to them. These skills have evolved through the ages and been handed down.

Indian Head Massage involves the client sat comfortably in a chair, fully clothed. The back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp are massaged. Oil (such as coconut) can be used on the scalp and hair also, if the client would like this. The oil is used to moisturise the scalp and help the hair to become vibrant and alive.

Why Do We Need Indian Head Massage?

Stress has become part and parcel of our daily lives and is necessary for survival. The problems develop when the stress continues and the body remains in an "on alert" status. This interrupts the natural functioning of the physiological workings of the body - the heart pumps faster the blood pressure increases, adrenalin is pumped into the circulation causing extra energy to be released to muscular activity, the digestive system shuts down, the urinary system shuts down, the pupils dilate, the sweat glands increase production.

All this just to prepare for the "fight or flight" - to defend ourselves or to run away! This action we need to cope with stressful times but when the incident has passed the body needs and should return to normal. In severe cases of stress the actions described for fight or flight remain and the body begins to suffer from the effects of the constant tense environment of the internal workings of the body.

How Does Indian Head Massage Work?

Indian Head Massage can provide instant relief from the tense muscles, tense mind and tense emotions of the body. The massage can be deep or light in pressure and using different strokes. The cycle of stress is broken by the relaxation of the mind, the soothing of the joints; this begins to restore balance. This releasing the stagnant energy of the body and like a breath of fresh air, cleans away the 'debris' of the stress in the body.
